DIY Makeup Bag (With Zipper) | ThatOneGirlFrank

DIY Makeup Bag tutorial. Learn how to make this bag with a zipper. Use to keep your makeup, toiletries, sewing supplies, pencils, or whatever you would like. I like to keep one of these in the backpack I take with me to work. Currently I have pens, markers, floss, a toothbrush, hand sanitizer, lotion, scrunchies, and tissues inside mine. LOL. That's a lot of junk I don't want floating around in the bag loose. I have also busted a lotion before and the bag prevented it from spilling on my paperwork and laptop. Phew!

As promised, here are the written instructions. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. Send me a message here or on YouTube. Or you can even send me a message on my instagram: @thatonegirlfrank

Supplies:
  • 1/2 yard fabric (additional fabric if you want a contrasting lining)
    • 4 pieces measuring 9 1/2 x 13 inches (2 lining, 2 outer)
    • 1 piece measuring 2 1/4 x 7 inches
  • Matching thread
  • 14" zipper
  • Fusible fleece
    • 2 pieces measuring 9 1/2 x 13 inches

Step 1: The first thing you're going to do is cut all your pieces. The lining, the outer pieces, and the fusible interfacing.

Step 2: Take your lining pieces and the fusible fleece and fuse according to the manufacturer directions. Fuse to the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 3: Take the piece that measures 2 1/4 x 7 inches, and fold in half. Press. Fold in 1/4" on each edge and press again. Stitch 1/8" down on each side.

Step 4: Cut this piece in half. These will be used for the tabs on each side of the bag. You do not have to add the tabs if you don't want to.

Step 5: Next take your lining piece down, right side up. Then, place your zipper on top, right side up. Lining up the edge of the zipper with the edge of the fabric.

Step 6: Next, put your outer fabric on top, right sides together (wrong side up). Pin and stitch with 1/4" seam allowance. Make sure to catch all 3 layers. Turn out and press.

Step 7: Next you are going to repeat this step with the lining and outer piece to the other side of the zipper. Place your lining piece right side up, place zipper (with the other pieces attached), right side up, and then the outer piece right side down (right sides together). I like to say up and down with this, because the zipper makes things a little more confusing for me.

Step 8: Next you are going to press open and top stitch 1/8" from the seam line.

Step 10: Next, fold the outer pieces right sides together.

Step 11: Stitch 1/2" seam allowance down the edge opposite the zipper edge. Then zig zag stitch in the seam allowance to prevent the edge from fraying.

Step 12: Then trim the edges so they're even. Trim up to the zipper, but NOT through the zipper.

Step 13: Fold the bag so the zipper and the new seam line match up.

Step 14: Fold the tab you made earlier in half. Place between the layers, lining up all raw edges, centered. Pin and stitch with 1/2" seam allowance.

Step 15: Straight stitch, and then zig zag stitch. I move the needle with the wheel manually over the zipper. Go slow, and try not to break your needle.

Step 16: Unzip 3/4 of the way so you can turn your bag inside out. Repeat this on the other side. Overlap the zipper teeth so they lay flat and go through the machine easier. Again, GO SLOW! Move the needle manually. Place the tab between the layers, pin, and stitch. Zig zag in the seam allowance.

Step 17: Trim the excess zipper off using non-fabric scissors. Do not cut through your stitches.

Step 18: Mark 1 3/4" from the seam line, and 1 3/4" from the folded edge. Make sure to measure from the seam line, NOT the raw edge. Measuring from the raw edge would be the 1/2" seam allowance plus the 1 3/4" for a total of 2 1/4" from the raw edge, and 1 3/4" from the folded edge. Mark all 4 corners.

Step 19: Trim along the markings.

Step 20: Mark the folded edge where you just trimmed (View red marking on image).

Step 21: Match the marked edge with the center of the seam line.

Step 22: Pin and stitch with 1/2" seam allowance, and then zig zag stitch in the seam allowance. Repeat on all 4 corners.

Step 23: Make sure all your seam allowances are facing the same direction, like this!

NOT like this. I made a mistake and I have one seam allowance facing up, and one facing down. It's not a huge deal since it's inside, but the bag will sit better if they're both facing the same direction.

Step 24: Turn your bag inside out, and you are done! Congratulations! Please share your creations with me. Use the hashtag #ThatOneGirlFrank
